Preparing 2024 Marketing Plans: A Deep Dive into P.E.S.T Analysis

As 2024 preparations unfold, businesses, especially nonprofits, charities and social enterprises, need robust communication strategies to navigate the ever-changing landscape and engage audiences. This is where a P.E.S.T or S.W.O.T. analysis steps in as a valuable tool, providing a comprehensive understanding of the Political, Economic, Social, and Technological factors shaping the market.  While a volunteer board is often very well briefed on key performance measures and your own organization’s internal strengths and weaknesses, these 2024 strategic discussions can often be enhanced by providing your board with a succinct summary of current P.E.S.T factors for your specific sector.

Political:  By analyzing government policies, regulations, and political trends, businesses can anticipate potential changes in the business environment. For nonprofits and business charities, understanding political agendas aids in aligning initiatives with governmental priorities, ensuring maximum impact and support.  Teams can begin by summarizing the key points from ministry and or municipal plans and budgets.

Economic:  A thorough analysis of economic indicators, inflation rates, and consumer spending patterns is crucial and a number of economic reports are readily available to assist teams.  (e.g. OECD, BDC Canada, Bank of Canada, Your local Canadian Bank’s or Municipalities Economic Reports, or Local Libraries will have sector-specific business analysis reports and resources etc.).  Nonprofits can leverage economic data to tailor donation campaigns, while businesses can adjust pricing strategies based on consumer purchasing power, ensuring affordability and competitiveness.

Social: Canada, known for its diverse and multicultural society, requires marketers to be culturally sensitive. Analyzing social factors, such as demographics, lifestyle choices, and cultural trends, enables businesses and nonprofits to create campaigns that resonate with the target audience. For example, understanding the rising trends in business charity and socially responsible initiatives allows organizations to tailor their marketing messages to appeal to socially conscious consumers.

Technological:  In today’s digital age, technology is a game-changer. Analyzing tech trends helps businesses stay innovative and relevant. From leveraging social media platforms for marketing to adopting cutting-edge fundraising technologies or payment gateways for nonprofits, understanding the technological landscape is indispensable.
